big week for the lakers!

6/3/2021

Tuesday saw the Lakers at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium, home of the Gophers! They finally defeated the Washburn Millers for the THIRD time this season in a tough battle. It was tied 0-0 going into the bottom of the 6th inning when the Lakers finally got on the scoreboard with hits by Evelyn Jastrow and Lindsey Bartholomew. Kal's pitching was stellar and the Lakers shut down Washburn for a shutout win!
Most of the Millers and Lakers have played as teammates at some point as well as opponents, so they celebrated together. They have really brought out the best in each other!

Then the Lakers were on to Wayzata where the 6th inning worked its magic once again! After 5 scoreless innings, Wayzata scored 2 at the bottom of the 5th after a scary moment where the left fielder crashed headlong into the fence. (Last report was that she is fine. Whew!)
But the Lakers shook it off and Rory Harris started off the scoring frenzy. The Lakers were helped by a couple of walks and a handful of errors, but really it was their grit that got it done (helped by Kal Harris whipping out the purple cowboy hat and distinctive whoops to rally the team from the sidelines!)
Once they started hitting, it seemed they couldn't stop. Megan Smith (again!) hit a home run and Rory Harris missed one by inches. The Lakers closed out the 6th inning with 7 runs.
All that remained was to hold them and the Lakers did it in style. A combination of Kal's signature strikeouts and some solid fielding ended the game with the Lakers jubilantly on top!
Also, for those of you keeping count, Kal Harris is at 170 strikeouts!

The city is OUrs!

5/25/2021

Brisk winds couldn't keep the Southwest team from clinching the City Championship in a 6-1 battle against South. This makes them UNDEFEATED against Minneapolis teams!
Kal is now up to 141 strikeouts!
Kal Harris and Lindsey Bartholomew were recognized as the team's Seniors. Both have played Varsity for all their time at Southwest- Kal for 5 years and Lindsey for 4 years. They will be missed, but not quite yet. We still have games to play!
Join us Thursday, May 27th at 4:00 for an exciting contest at Jane Cowles Stadium, home of the Minnesota Gophers Fastpitch team. The Lakers will be playing against the winner of the St Paul championship!

100 strikeouts!

5/19/2021

With three games left in the regular season, Senior Kal Harris smashed past 100 strikeouts, assisting the Lakers in a 6-0 victory over South. This means that the Lakers have defeated every one of the city teams!
Rounding out a sweet day for the Harris family was an in the park home run by Freshman Rory Harris. The Harris household will be celebrating tonight!

A busy week...

5/13/2021

There has been a LOT of softball lately, so updating the website has fallen behind.  There is too many highlights to cover them all, but here is a few high points in the highlights from the last crazy week!:
  • Bats are moving! After a little bit of a hitting slump by the Lakers, they have started knocking the ball all over. Lately, all they do is score runs!
  • At the Thursday game against Roosevelt, Lawless hit a Grand Slam inside-the-park home run! London hit a second in-the-park home run with 2 RBIs! SEVEN runs off of 2 hits!
  • Jastrow has been spending some time on the mound to spread the pitching love. She's been looking good, shutting out both Edison and Roosevelt.
  • The tournament on Saturday the 8th was a Laker SWEEP! They started the day with a tight game against St. Agnes and just got better from there. Nothing succeeds like success and the Lakers confidence bloomed. They scored a total of 27 runs in the three games. Way to go!
  • All this scoring has meant that Coach Sisson has been doing some subbing, giving a wide variety of players a chance to get in on the action. It's great to see some new faces at bat and see some players building strengths in secondary positions.
  • JV has also been catching the infectious confidence (although they have missed out on a few games because of a couple teams that only field a Varsity team.) But smiles on faces (still visible under the masks!) are clear evidence that they are feeling good about how things are going!
  • And, finally, starting pitcher Kal Harris is attracting some notice being ranked #10 in the STATE for strikeouts!
